Football players were ‘drinking in Devizes pub before testing positive for COVID-19’

Three Devizes Town Football Club players have tested positive for coronavirus.

The men, who have not been named by the club, are said to have received positive COVID-19 tests earlier this week – just days after they were drinking in The Cavalier pub in Eastleigh Road.

As a result, and in line with guidance from NHS England, the club has pulled out of four Toolstation League matches they were due to play between 5 September and 15 September.

When Wiltshire 999s approached The Cavalier for comment, a spokesperson initially said they were aware of the confirmed cases and had deep-cleaned the premises between Monday and Wednesday. They also said that they had kept their customers informed of developments.

However, a short time later in a second conversation, the pub denied all knowledge of the confirmed cases stating they “have had no confirmation of these cases from [NHS] Test and Trace”, adding that “this is the first we’ve heard about [their customers testing positive for COVID-19]”.

Nearby, The Bell by the Green pub, in Estcourt St, announced its closure for a deep clean and staff testing following confirmation that a punter tested positive for COVID-19.
