Men jumped into river to flee police after Melksham supermarket robbery

Two men tried to flee the scene of a robbery in Melksham by jumped into the River Avon yesterday.

Police were called to reports of a man stealing money from the till at Iceland in High Street at around 5pm, assaulting a female member of store staff in the process by pushing her to the chest.

Armed with descriptions of the two suspects involved, officers carried out a search of the area and soon found them swimming in the river near King George V Park in a bid to get away.

The two men, both in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of robbery. One of the males was also arrested on suspicion of having class A drugs. Both were taken to Melksham custody.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We received a report that a man had attempted to buy goods from a till and when the cashier opened the till, he pushed her to the chest and reached into the till taking a handful of cash.

“Descriptions were given to officers and a search of the area was conducted. Two men were located in the river near to the train station a short time later and were arrested.

“A man in his 20s from Hampshire was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of class A drugs, and a second man in his 20s also from Hampshire was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

“Both remain in Melksham custody for further questioning.”
