Smell of burning at Network Rail offices sparks major fire service response

The smell of burning coupled with a fire alarm at Network Rail offices has sparked a major fire service response tonight.

Fire wardens evacuated employees from seven-storey Western House on Holbrook Way, off Fleming Way, at around 9.30pm.

Moments later, responding to reports of a suspect fire, a predetermined number of fire crews were sent to the scene — it included five appliances: four fire engines and an aerial platform. An incident command unit was also sent to the scene.

Two breathing apparatus wearing firefighters were sent into the building — with a hose reel jet and thermal imaging camera — in search of a fire but soon stood down.

No fire was found and no firefighting action was required. The last fire crew left the scene at 10.45pm.
