Car plunges into River Avon after striking bridge near Chippenham

A car plunged into the River Avon after striking a bridge near Chippenham this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the B4069 at Christian Malford shortly after 7pm.

A red Mini Cooper collided with the bridge before leaving the road and entering the water.

Fire crews from Chippenham and Royal Wootton Bassett rescued the driver from the wreckage using a winch and tools before they were handed over to paramedics.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance was tasked to the scene, landing in a nearby field. The casualty wasn’t airlifted to hospital and their condition is currently unknown.

The road remains closed in both directions whilst the vehicle is recovered using a winch. It’s expected to remained closed for several hours.
