It transpired that the weapon shown by a woman during the dispute between two separate narrowboat occupants was an air pistol. She was subsequently arrested.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Officers were called to an incident on the Kennet and Avon Canal at approximately 6.45pm last night following a report that a woman had been seen in possession of a suspected firearm on a boat.

“A woman in her 70s was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place and taken to Melksham custody for questioning.

“She has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.”
