Explosion heard across Swindon moments before early morning power cut

An explosion was heard across Swindon moments before a power cut this morning.

Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) is at this stage continuing its investigation into the cause of the short outage at around 5.10am.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of a report of possible damage to our overhead network this morning. There was a brief interruption affecting our main network between 05:13 and 05:18.

“Our engineers responded to this and remained on site until recently carrying out investigations into the cause. Our control team were able to restore supplies via network alterations and will be arranging for our team to complete any repairs required as soon as possible.

“In most cases faults on our main network are caused by environmental factors such as trees touching our lines or animals like squirrels or birds.”
