Police officers narrowly avoided being stabbed with screwdriver by man in crisis

Three police officers narrowly avoided being stabbed with a screwdriver when they attended a mental health-related emergency call in West Wiltshire this morning.

The man is understood to have been in crisis when he assaulted the officers when they were tasked to assist paramedics at an address at around 9.30am.

While they tried to restrain the man, who needed urgent medical attention, three of them were assaulted with a screwdriver – but their body armour protected them from serious injury.

Inspector Jeff Rice, Force Incident Manager, said: “This was an extremely volatile situation for everyone involved, and could easily have seen police officers seriously injured.

“But thankfully, the body armour they were wearing protected them and kept them safe.

“This incident highlights the potentially risky situations that officers put themselves in day after day while carrying out their duties to keep people safe.”

The casualty has been taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Wiltshire Police say no arrests have been made, and the incident is not being treated as a crime.
