Man, 24, arrested after lengthy pursuit – but wanted assault suspect gets away

A mans been arrested after a pursuit down the A419 and into Swindon tonight.

The driver of a black Vauxhall Corsa, which was seen travelling at high speed down Whitworth Road at 7.55pm, stopped in Pinehurst moments later with the driver being detained.

The second occupant of the vehicle – thought to be 19-year-old Isaiah Tafari who is wanted for two assaults – fled the scene on foot and the police helicopter was called in to help search for him.

The pursuit was first authorised in the north of the county at around 6.30pm, meaning the police chase lasted approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “As part of our ongoing enquiries to locate a wanted suspect in Swindon this evening, officers attempted to stop a car at around 6.30pm.

“The driver failed to stop for police, and a pursuit was authorised, which culminated in the vehicle eventually coming to a stop in Pinehurst Road.

“One of the occupants of the car was apprehended by police, but the other left the scene on foot.

“A 24-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

“He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

“Our enquiries to locate the wanted suspect are currently ongoing.”
