Fences damaged as people access closed charity railway near Swindon

Fences have been damaged as members of the public illegally accessed a railway line near Swindon.

It’s believed people have been visiting the site despite the locked gates to walk alongside the railway, or cross the tracks at Swindon and Cricklade Railway over the weekend.

Staff at the charity are preforming regular security checks at the site with anyone found trespassing being “asked to leave immediately”, a spokesperson wrote on Facebook.

“Today some of our members performed security checks along the line and we have found many damaged fences where the public have tried to gain access to either cross or walk near the line”, they added.

“These fences are there for your safety.

“Designated crossing points along the line have gated access and suitable ways to cross the line if required. Please use these crossing points and not make shift ones that have appeared.

“Although we are closed, a railway can still be a dangerous place and our trained staff are not on site to assist in case of an accident or an emergency.

“Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we currently cannot run to make any income and these repairs will be costly to make them safe.”
