Suicide prevention charity suspends support over coronavirus fears

One of the UK’s most trusted suicide prevention charities has suspended all support services in light of recent advice issued by the government about coronavirus.

PAPYRUS, which provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide, has temporarily stopped answering calls, texts and emails from those in crisis.

The charity say they took the “difficult decision” following announcements from the government today, but supporters of the service want them to reassess their decision to close a helpline which will be needed more than ever in the coming weeks, as thousands self-isolate.

A spokesperson for PAPYRUS said: “With the restrictions in place and only essential travel advised, we are unable to guarantee that we can provide our normal service provision.

“In the meantime, we have lots of advice, guidance and resources available at PAPYRUS-uk.org for children and young people who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide, and for those who may be concerned for a young person with thoughts of suicide.

“If you, or someone you know is at immediate risk of harm, please call 999.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.”

On Facebook, Tracy Horth commented: “I’m unsure as to why you have taken this disappointing decision. The government advice is IF you can work from home to do so. The work you guys do is vital.

“Surely your staff can run text line, telephone and email from home? Sad to see this Papyrus, don’t understand how you have arrived at this decision?”

Another upset supporter, Sabrina Savanne, wrote: “At a time like this, I think your services will be required more than ever. Please reconsider.”
