Forensics attend suspected arson attack on vulnerable man’s flat in Swindon

Forensic investigators have attended the scene of a suspected arson attack at a property in Swindon this morning.

It is understood that something was posted through the letterbox of a vulnerable man at just before midnight on Tuesday, and then set alight.

A community support officer was seen guarding the door of the flat block in Russell Walk, Walcot, at 10am as council contractors OSE Security Systems fitted a CCTV camera to the outside of the building.

A local resident told our reporter at the scene that the original CCTV cameras were covered with spray paint before the attack.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called at 11pm yesterday to reports of a fire at an address on Russell Walk. The front door of the property had been set alight.

“When officers arrived, the fire, which we are treating as arson, had been put out. The occupant was outside the property and was unharmed.

“We are continuing to investigate.”

Swindon Borough Council have been approached for comment.
