Stretch of Wiltshire road closed after BMW loses power in deep floodwater

An east Wiltshire road has been closed this afternoon after a car became stuck in deep floodwater.

A black BMW, driven by a female, was witnessed travelling through the severe flood on the A342 near Devizes, sparking a recovery operation before 4pm.

Wiltshire Police took the decision to closed a stretch of the road in Lydeway, near The Clock Inn, due to safety fears.

A spokesperson said: “Drivers should avoid the area at this time and find an alternative route.

“There is likely to be several roads across the county that have been affected by today’s rainfall so please take extra care if you are heading out – especially now it is getting dark.”

It’s not clear how long the road will be closed for, and police haven’t advised drivers of the best diversion route.
