Suspected hazmat incident in Swindon sparks major emergency response

A suspected hazardous material incident sparked a major emergency service response this morning.

Specialist paramedics from the ambulance service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were called to Screwfix on in Swindon at around 6.50am following reports of a casualty falling ill.

Five police units were in attendance on Rushy Platt Industrial Estate, alongside three fire crews. A large police cordon was in place at the scene for two hours.

It’s believed the patient actually suffered an allergic reaction and the cordon was lifted shortly after the casualty was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 06:51 and attended with an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and HART (hazardous area response team).

“One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment.”

Wiltshire Police confirmed the incident was medical-related and didn’t comment further.
