A car has smashed through barriers on a bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal.

The incident happened on Prison Bridge in Devizes at around 1.30am, where a vehicle penetrated the safety barriers and ended up on the side of the canal – missing the water by just metres.

Police, fire crews and the ambulance service were called the crash, while the police helicopter and dog units tracked the occupants of the car – all of which fled the scene.

Only in August was 21-year-old mother Karly Heweson killed in a crash on Prison Bridge, when a car similarly smashed through the safety barriers.

There are likely to be delays in the area this morning as the council work to repair the barriers.

It is not yet clear whether any arrests have been made.

We’ve approached Wiltshire Police for comment.
