Firefighters tackle blaze within derelict building in Swindon town centre

Firefighters have tackled a blaze within a derelict property in Swindon town centre this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Milton Road at just before 4pm today, where fire crews from Swindon, Stratton and Westlea, discovered a mattress ablaze.

The fire was immediately extinguished but firefighters remained at the scene at 5pm, as they searched for fire that could have spread, and smoke pockets within the building.

A senior fire officer at the scene speculated that the fire may have been started accidentally by a homeless person taking shelter there.

Curtis Street is blocked between Crombey Street and Commercial Road.
