Council express anger over arson attack on children’s play area in Swindon

Children will be deprived of a play area for many weeks following an arson attack on Monday.

Firefighters were called to Stephens Road, off Oxford Road near the Greenbridge Roundabout, at around 8pm last night following reports of a large fire in a field.

Part of the play area was destroyed in the blaze and will be closed until further notice.

A spokesperson for Stratton St Margaret Parish Council said: “We really can’t understand why people old enough to start a fire think it’s okay to ruin a small child’s playtime?

“Perhaps they thought it’d be funny? But it’s not only the cost to replace it, it’s the fact that our younger community can’t enjoy the area until we find funds to replace and make everything safe.”

Anyone with information relating to this incident should contact Wiltshire Police by calling 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
